Media Statement on the Aarson Attack on Karabo FM in SasolburgMedia statement on the arson attack on Karabo FM in Sasolburg,10 September 2013
The Ministry of Communications condemns the senseless arson attack on Saturday on Karabo FM, a community radio station in Sasolburg in the Free State. The attack destroyed all equipment and rendered the building unusable.
“It is appalling that community members can seek to silence their own voice by burning down their own radio station.
“We appeal to all South Africans to be more tolerant of people who hold views that are different to theirs. Let us always strive to find non-violent ways to resolve our differences. That is the best way we can use to continuously honour the legacy of the founding President of a democratic South Africa, Tat’uMandela,” Deputy Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams said.
She expressed her confidence that the police would bring the culprits to book as soon as possible.
“We encourage the workers of Karabo FM to not despair and ensure that they find ways to keep the voice of the community of Sasolburg alive and strong. Indeed, we plead with all workers and volunteers in community radio stations to focus on their work of deepening our democracy and in celebrating the 20 years of Community Broadcasting in our country. Because of your work and dedication, more than 8.5 million South Africans a day are entertained and informed by community radio stations,” said Ndabeni-Abrahams.
She called on the community of Sasolburg to hold hands and restore Karabo FM as their credible voice.
